Fishing Regulations & Licences in Canada

Official fishing rules for all 13 provinces and territories, plus a licence, access and waterbody checklist for RV travellers.

Published October 12, 2026 · Check official rules immediately before fishing.

Fishing rules are local and can change during the season. Use this directory to reach the responsible authorities, then check the exact lake, river section, species and date. This page is a route to current rules rather than a substitute for them.

Official provincial and territorial authorities

A rules checklist for an RV fishing trip

  • Licence: confirm resident, Canadian visitor or international visitor category, validity and any exemptions.
  • Location: identify the waterbody, zone and special exceptions.
  • Season: check your target species and current closure notices.
  • Equipment: read hook, bait and gear restrictions.
  • Catch: check retention, size and possession limits, including fish in the RV.
  • Transport: preserve required species and size identification.
  • Access: obtain permission for private land or managed fishing territory.
  • Other authorities: check national parks, tidal waters and salmon rules where relevant.

Multiple jurisdictions and special waters

Do a fresh check when crossing a provincial or territorial border. BC’s freshwater regulations source excludes salmon and national park fishing from its general coverage. Ontario uses management zones with waterbody exceptions. Québec’s rules also depend on zone, species, water and date. These examples show why a licence and a general rule are only the start of the check.

In Newfoundland and Labrador and New Brunswick, visitors should specifically investigate guide requirements for the proposed activity and waters. Never assume the requirements for one visitor trip apply to another.

Keep a usable record

Save your licence and the relevant official pages offline. Write down the waterbody, zone, species, date checked and any special limits. Recheck current notices immediately before fishing, and contact the authority if you cannot resolve a rule. A screenshot of an old guide may miss an in-season change.
